Frequently asked questions
- What is a map seed?
- SCP:SL generates its facility procedurally each round, and the number that drives that generation is the map seed. You can read it with the seed command in the in-game console.
- Why does the same seed give the same map?
- Because the room and zone layout is produced by a random generator seeded from that number. With the same seed and the same game version, the layout comes out identical every time.
- Can it show exact item and generator positions?
- No. The actual placement of items and generators is decided each round by a separate random source, not the seed, so it can’t be predicted. The viewer shows only the candidate spots where things can spawn, and that is the most a seed can reveal.
- Is Seed Sniffer safe?
- It reads the seed of your current server from the game’s own log. It does not modify any game files. Because it is an unsigned script, though, Windows or antivirus software may flag it with a false positive.
- What data is collected?
- When you use Seed Sniffer linking, we record the detected seed, the game server address you joined, the link token and your IP address. Site access logs also keep your IP address and browser information. Records are used only to run the service and prevent abuse, and are not shared with anyone. See the Privacy Policy for details.
- How accurate is the map?
- The room and zone layout has been verified against real dumps from game version 14.2.7. Just remember that actual item positions can’t be predicted from a seed, as explained above.
- What does “this server hides its seed” mean?
- When a server owner installs the SLMAPS plugin and registers the server, the seeds it reports cannot be viewed or collected during the round. A server hides one seed at a time for up to 1 hour (20 minutes for an HTTP-key registration), and the block lifts when the round ends. While hidden, the map screen shows the remaining time.
- I run a server — can I keep my seeds off SLMAPS?
- Yes. Follow the “Server plugin” guide: install the plugin and register your server with /server claim in the SLMAPS Discord. Afterwards the Discord panel shows the protection state, the seed being hidden right now and how many map views were blocked.
- I can’t see the Seed Sniffer download button.
- Seed Sniffer is not offered in some regions. From those regions the download and the live link are blocked, and the link card says it is unavailable in your region. Map lookups keep working as usual.
- I’m linked, but detected seeds don’t arrive.
- The link is tied to your internet connection (IP). If your IP changes after linking — switching Wi-Fi, a VPN, a game booster — seeds may stop arriving. IPv6 lines change addresses often and are especially affected. Unlink (✕), download Seed Sniffer again and run it.
